So my name is Gav and I work here in Newcastle Drums and play drums in Newcastle, rock band, Boy Jumps Ship. I have been pulling double duty for a while now and I love playing drums in the band and working in the shop, I really do get the best of both worlds.
We have recently just been out on a couple of UK tours both supporting and headlining in support of our recently released album 'Wake Up'. On these tours I took out one of Drum Shop UK's greatest new arrivals, The Natal Arcadia Acrylic Kit in 22, 12, 14fl, 16fl and changed my snares on each night, using mainly my Craviotto Maple 14" x 8" and changing it out on some nights for the Dunnett 'Trussart' Copper Rose 14" x 6.5" Snare drum.
In all honesty, I have always been pretty skeptical about using acrylic drums for many reasons, but I can safely say after taking this drum kit on tour for almost 4 months, I am well and truly on board the train and behind them 100%.
From using the drums in a live environment I have learnt the ins and outs of the kit very quickly indeed. It goes without saying that the drum kit looks incredible and when incorporating a big light show into your set, it really accentuates the visual side of things. I have always thought they looked great but not been so sure of their capability on the sound side of things, this has all changed. I fitted the drums with Evans G2 Clear Drum Heads on the batter side and Evans G1 Clear Drum Heads on the resonant side, I put an EMAD on the bass drum batter side and an EQ3 on the reso side. With these heads I found the drums to have a fantastic tuning range and a real energetic and responsive sound. The toms did ring an awful lot and so incorporated some e-rings and moon gel into the set up and used them sparingly. I really found the sweet spot with the drums and had a big, fat yet extremely punchy sound.
