I've just been told from the guys out at NAMM that Mapex have released two brand new drum kit series 'Armory' and 'Mars' and they're pretty damn impressive!

The new Armory drum kits have been built using a number of top-end features from the current Mapex Saturn IV series including SONIClear Suspension System for the rack toms. This innovative tom mount system increases the drums resonance by preserving vibration in the drum heads brining an overall better sound... Clever! The Mapex Armory drum kits also have many new features such as the SONIClear Bearing Edge. Many audio tests have been carried out comparing a drums typical bearing edge with the SONIClear bearing edge and the results are remarkable! Tests show that when both comparable drums are tuned to the same pitch and recording identically, the SONIClear edge drums produce a much larger waveform, right from the initial strike. It has also been proven that drums with the SONIClear edge are quicker and easier to tune as the drum head is allowed to sit flush to the drum, whereas with typical bearing edge the head is sat too high which can make turning difficult and also results in poor shell resonance.

Similar to the transparent black, the transparent walnut finish allows the natural grain to show through creating a simple, yet beautiful effect.
