We're desperately craving some sun here at Drum Shop, the North east weather is trying it's hardest to shine down on us, but nothing is quite like summer sun, summer vibes and summer feels! And this is where the Ukulele comes in, we can all relate to that soothing, Hawaiian sound that just makes you instantly think of summer and this is the closest we've got for you until the sun shines permanently here in the UK! Fancy turning your hand to this charming instrument? Then BUY ONE HERE!
But what is a Ukulele?
The ukulele belongs to the guitar family and is a string instrument with a difference, it has a very distinctive, mellow sound that you can't help but be charmed by. With a similar shape to a standard guitar, the ukulele looks like a miniature version with a similar shape and make up. Standard ukuleles have four strings but it has been known to see eight stringed versions with two-string courses. Often associated with Hawaii and beach vibes, the ukulele is a much loved instrument over there, but it does not originate from Hawaii. As disappointed as we are to burst your bubble, if you want to know all things ukulele then we insist you must know it's true origins! It seems the ukulele has been developed and reinterpreted after a Portuguese ship docked in Honolulu in 1879; on board was Joao Fernandes carrying a very similar stringed instrument called the Braguinha. In so, this instrument became such a hit with the Hawaiians that it just kind of stuck there and developed into the ukulele's we know and love today! The ukulele has been littered through time and is a firm favourite among a range of musicians and celebrities! There seems to be a much deserved hype around the ukulele and we are so glad that after all this time it has had several moments in the sun!
Artists such as Sara Bareilles, Paul McCartney and Jake Shimabukro have all been spotted playing the ukulele. Not only this, hollywood legends Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe have also turned their hand to this instrument and brought it some notable attention, you could say they played a part in bringing the ukulele into the mainstream.
Remember a couple of years back when a revamp of Somewhere over the Rainbow by Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole pretty much went viral? Well that revamp was created with IZ and his ukulele. Laid back, summer breeze vibes encompass that song when IZ sings it and there is not a person who won't remember this song once they hear it again!
