Here at Drum Shop, we absolutely love Drum Workshop and know all you lovely customers do too! The Collector's series is, without a doubt, DW's best work so far, so we ordered in five kits in their most stunning finishes! Before we introduce you to the kits you need to know about DW, right?!
Back in 1972. Founder and President of DW, Don Lombardi, opened up a small teaching studio in Santa Monica, he offered both private lessons and monthly workshops, and of course called it Drum Workshop! John Good, now DW's Vice President, discovered the teaching studio in the Yellow Pages when he was 17 and signed up to improve his skills. When Don realised his profits were being eaten up, John became his part-time sales manager and DW began to sell equipment like sticks, books and drums, as well as bringing in investors and additional teachers. Together, Don and John, spent hours brainstorming how the art of drumming could be improved, one of the outcomes was Dw's first product: Don's new design for a height-adjustable trap-case seat, it was a huge success! When they started selling about a dozen seats a month, John saw how much potential DW had, so he quit his day job to work full-time for Don. Don and John knew they had something huge when Camco Drum Co. put in a purchase order for 100 seats, these seats were truly innovative. However, this made them realise Drum Workshop only had the capacity and personnel to create a dozen seats a month, not 100!
The big break in DW's journey to success was when Don was approached by Camco Drum Co. owner Tom Beckman with an incredible offer... He wanted to sell him Camco's manufacturing equipment! This meant DW could expand both the amount they made and the product line. Of course, Don accepted the offer, Drum Workshop's direction officially changed from teaching and selling to manufacturing. From there, Don furthered his innovations and worked towards his goal of improving the art of drumming. Whilst Don developed the hardware, John set out to become a drum technician, he learned about every aspect of drum building and was determined to perfect every kit. By the 80's, DW had became a serious competitor within the drumming community, through Don and Johns hard work and dedication to produce top-quality products with unique features, the high demand meant that DW had to double its manufacturing space, moving to Newbury Park!
Big drummers like Motley Crue's Tommy Lee, "leading session drummer in America" Jim Keltner, TCB Band and The Notorious Cherry Bomb's Larrie Londin and many more, began to buy kits from DW, this gave Don and John hope for their drum making path. After producing the first serious DW drum catalog and attenting the 1990 NAMM show, they had to move again to accommodate an increasing need for space, moving to its current facility in Oxnard. Some of the drummer's drummers that are loyal customers to DW today are Today, drummer's drummers such as Sheila E., Terry Bozzio, Neil Peart, Marco Minnemann and Gary Novak, along with drummers of popular acts such as Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Dixie Chicks, Incubus, Mana, Missy Elliott, Avril Lavigne...
DW has remained consistent and passionate for over 30 years, constantly producing products of the highest quality that are guaranteed to improve every drummers experience.
The Drum Workshop Collector's Series is the original American Made custom drum set, it offers you the chance to create your ideal set-up through a seemingly endless amount of options, from the California Custom Shop shell configurations and materials to the high-end finish combinations. These kits are suited to every drummer and genre imaginable! The innovative features of Collector's kits are endless, here's some of our favourites...
Collector's kits can be either Maple, Birch, Cherry or Oak, all five of our brand new kits are Pure Maple, we chose the Pure Maple shells because the resonance, projection and attack they offer is truly unbeatable! Maple isn't the most popular wood in the drum making industry for nothing! A little about the other woods now... The Pure Birch offers bright tones with shorter resonance, Pure Cherry is rotart cut from hand-selected logs and makes for a very 'musical wood that yields distinctive melodic clarity and finally, Pure Oak shells are crafted from thicker, 1/32" plies of select Red Oak, this produces a certain robustness to the shells and makes this the perfect choice for louder playing situations. The hardwood is combined with reinforcement hoops to produce sounds that are more focused and translate well in both live and studio performances. The drum shells are produced in the California Custom Shop, a completely unique space, DW are able to provide super high-quality drums by responsibly harvesting their woods!
DW offer three types of hoops, Standard Triple Flange Hoops; these come in graduated weights (1.6mm for 8" & 10" toms and 2.3mm for 12-18" toms and snares), Die Cast Hoops; these offer added weight and stout construction to naturally reduce resonance and provide an alternate tonal quality, and our choice, True Hoops. We chose their True Hoops because this design is a major advancement for the relationship between bearing edge, drum head and counter hoop. The True Hoop is the answer the all drummers prayers, after spending over a year designing and perfecting this crucial feature, DW produced their most consistent counter hoop, yet. The True Hoops are unlike any other, both round and flat and without the typical variations around stamped holes most hoops do, the fully-rounded outer edge is an attractive new touch you never knew you needed!
The patented DW STM (suspension tom mount) system offer drummers the chance to get the most out of their toms. These mounts allow drums to vibrate freely, producing maximum resonance all whilst they remain securely in place! Reduced choking and super easy tuning?! Yes, please! But how? You might ask. Well, it's simple... without any washers or grommets inhibiting the lug rod receiver, choking is reduced and tuining is easier than ever!
We want the best for our customers, that's why we equipped these kits with DW's True-Pitch 50 Tuning Rods! Forget Standard Tension Rods and make way for superior True-Pitch Tension Rods... All drummers know that achieving perfection when tuning is vital, right? Well, that's exactly what these rods do. True-Pitch 50 rods feature an added thread count, this gives drummers even more control over their sound. At fifty threads per inch, these rods offer supreme tuning with a much more precise and refined result, the stainless steel adds to their ultra-smooth fine-tuning with less back-out.
The five kits we ordered have matching features and configurations but different finishes. We chose a super versatile configuration that caters to all drummers and finishes that everyone loves! So, finally here they are...
