We love to support drummers, whether they're male or female, but since it's International Women's Day today we're paying particular homage to all the female drummers out there repping it for the girls! International Women's Day 2018 is a day celebrated globally which shouts about social, cultural, economic and political achievements of women worldwide and although we celebrate along with the world, we like to pay particular attention to those girls out there doing it the drummer's way!
One of our favourites is the insanely talented Anika Nilles, in this drum world of male domination Anika turns out performance after performance of pure brilliance, we can say this as we had the privilege of having Anika through the Drum Shop doors in May 2015 and boy did she show us how it's done. Anika by all accounts became well known through YouTube and being dubbed a YouTube sensation, her videos received millions of views and are in part what placed her firmly in the limelight! We love Anika's strong, expressive style and her finesse, she has a way of creating exciting compositions which keep you guessing, whilst working harmoniously with additional sounds. Check out Anika's YouTube channel and website, you won't be disappointed!
Let’s face it when you think of a female drummers the legend that was Karen Carpenter has got to spring to mind! Karen was an American singer and drummer and was undoubtedly best known for being one half of the distinct duo that was The Carpenters. Her soft vocals may have enticed audiences but we know that it was the magic she created behind her Ludwig drums and Zildjian cymbals is was what really made her special. Let’s rewind to the 1970s, for the most part women were not known for being drummers, it wasn’t common and it wasn’t cool, Karen swept through the 70s making her definitive mark with effortless compositions, impressive hand/foot combinations and single stroke fills and she did so inspiring a generation in her wake.
When it comes to drumming, every drummer will tell you that a series of little breaks all pave the way for that one big break that starts the ball rolling on a successful career, in short those who put in the hours of relentless practice feel the benefits in the end. This could be said for the incredible Meg White, her primal drum style is simple yet effective and this is how she has ended up playing alongside The White Stripes and The Raconteurs to name a few.
So we couldn’t write a blog post on International Women’s Day without celebrating one of our own, that’s right our very own Emma is also a seasoned drummer who is a Drum Shop sales advisor by day and drummer with rock band Scream of Sirens by night! Emma not only sells drums and plays drums, she also teaches them, that’s right she’s one experienced cookie!
If you haven’t guessed it already this blog post is a chance for us here at Drum Shop to give all the female drummers out there a big high five, a chance for us to scream from the rooftops at how AMAZING the female drumming community is and above all to inspire the next generation of girl power when it comes to drums!! We've only broke the surface here and we've only mentioned some of our favourites, but trust us there's loads more fantastic female drummers out there!
Like what we had to say in this post? Then show your support by sharing with us your favourite female drummer over on social media!
