When we say they deliver the "sound of Australia" we're not kidding and all will become clear once you start to learn more about this incredibly impressive brand.
For you guys who've never heard of Kentville Drums you may be thinking well who are they? Well don't you worry, in this blog post you'll learn all about Kentville Drums and why you should consider them as your next drumming purchase!
Handmade in Sydney, Australia, Kentville Drums offer high quality drum heads which are crafted using ethically sourced materials. Kentville Drums specialise in kangaroo hide drum heads and these heads offer drummers a completely unique sound which is certainly outside of the norm and outshines that of plastic drum heads! In terms of sound, the kangaroo hide drum heads have the ability to produce a full bodied warmth which is rich in tone and is perfect for a range of musical genres and settings. When they say that Kentville Drums offer "the sound of Australia" they aren't wrong, the responsive, melodic feel these heads deliver is super easy to tune and free of overtones.
Founder Steele Turkington describes the birth of Kentville Drums as "a simple aim of providing the Sydney community with a dedicated drum repair service, and in true Australian form, necessity really mothered invention."
And it's fair to say that this aim has gone well beyond the realms of Sydney and has spread across the world. Kentville Drums not only offer kangaroo hide drum heads they specialise in vintage and rare drums as well as offering an extensive and comprehensive repair, restoration and modification service. In addition, Kentville Drums are an authorised Gretsch, Ludwig, Yamaha, Pearl, DW and Sakae service and warranty repair centre.
In comparison to other well known drum head manufacturers Kentville Drums is a worthy alternative that elevates your sound like you would have never expected. Don't believe us? Well check out the Founder of Kentville Drums, Steele Turkington explain why Kentville Drums traditional and ethical approach to drum head manufacture is the way forward.
One of the significant features about Kentville Drums is that they provide fine quality kangaroo hides which are handmade in Sydney, Australia and are a traditional, ethical choice that rivals that of plastic drum heads.
Now you may be worried about using kangaroo hides, but as Steele mentions in his video above all the hides used are ethically sourced by-products of a culling program overseen by the New South Wales Office of Environment and Heritage. This program assists and ensures that the kangaroo population in eastern Australia remains healthy and at a sustainable number. The kangaroo is one of Australia’s national animals, and the highest level of consideration and care is taken to ensure that the hides are procured in an ethical and sustainable manner that serves to benefit the species. These hides are attached to a handmade, solid aluminium flesh hoop which ensures stability and durability of the head and it's sound. And when it comes to the sound, you'll be happy to hear the kangaroo hide heads are super versatile and work well within a range of musical genres, styles and situations as they produce a raw, full-bodied, warmth that is really responsive and meets the needs of the modern drummer!
Each drum head is handmade from start to finish and benefits from that hand rendered touch throughout. Drum heads are lapped in the exact same way as old western drums such as the snares of the drummer boys that served in the Battle of Gettysburg and the Napoleonic wars. This traditional process is embedded into the ethos of Kentville Drums and is a process that is key to the success of these heads. The hide selection is demanding and requires examination before skins are deemed suitable for drum head production. After being stretched and dried, the chosen hides are cut to size and thinned to achieve the desired thickness. They are then lapped to flesh hoops before being set on moulds to dry and form crowns which enable the heads to sit comfortably. Each head is then sealed and packaged before heading out across the world.
Like any other reputable drum brand, Kentville Drums has a large array of admirers, with some pretty reputable drummers opting to use Kentville Drums drum heads. From Charlie Watts (The Rolling Stones) to Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac), Chris Hayden (Florence and the Machine) to Warren Trout (The Voice/Kate Ceberano) and lots more in between!
