About Tama
Manufacturing products from hardware to drum kits, Tama have earned their status as one of the most recognisable and respectable brands in the drumming world. TAMA products are used and endorsed by some of the biggest names in drumming, such as Stewart Copeland, from The Police, Lars Ulrich, from Metallica and Simon Phillips from Toto.
As big and successful they are now, TAMA actually started off in 1965 with the aim of selling more affordable drum kits to the American market under the name Star Drums. At a time when the market was flooded with the more expensive competitors, like Rogers and Ludwig, TAMA were received well as low cost manufacturers. In 1974, the owner of "Star Drums" decided to make an effort to create more high quality drums and products under the TAMA brand name. After purchasing Camco Drum Company alongside Drum Workshop, both brands used Camco's equipment, designs and patent rights to create more high quality hardware. Their aim originally was to market the lower priced products to beginners and the higher quality to professionals, but eventually both had the same quality due to the equipment being used.
