One of our lovely and very generous customers, Dave popped into Drum Shop earlier in the week to test drive one of our electronic drum kits and happened to bring us a couple of bottles of ale! But this isn't any ordinary ale, oh no! This is Tyneside Tommy, a commemorative, locally brewed ale crafted by Three Kings Brewery.
Being a northern brand we have a particular love for hardworking, salt of the earth businesses which are born and flourishing in our region, with this in mind we felt that we had to shout about Three Kings Brewery after learning more about this fantastic product and yes you caught us, tasting it too! Three Kings Brewery create all the tastiness in their headquarters in North Shields, proudly brewing their beer on the banks of the River Tyne. So it seems that fog on the fog on the tyne is definitely not all mine, but that's ok if we had to share, we're glad it's with these guys!
An age old tradition of raising a glass to remember those who are no longer with us has been literally put to use with this concept. Each bottle of Tyneside Tommy ale has a limited edition 'dog tag' label attached to the bottle, with a range of 30 labels to collect, each with an individual story, depicting the life of fallen soldiers from the First World War. In partnership with the Northumbria World War One Commemoration Project, this is a project which is will hit home for a lot of people who have suffered loss at the hands of war. However it will also open a whole new audience up to the project who would have otherwise been unaware of the fantastic work the Northumbria WW1 Commemoration Project does and hopefully educate and keep those fallen soldier's memory alive.
Our bottle tells the story of Major Thomas Gibson of the 20th Battalion (1st Tyneside Scottish) Northumberland Fusiliers. Born in Whitley Bay, Thomas was an early volunteer who was killed in action on Saturday 1st July 1916 by German machine gun fire whilst leading his men into the attack on La Boiselle. Like countless others, Thomas' story is an all too familiar one.
Made with high quality ingredients, this craft ale contains English hops and malted barley, a locally brewed ale for local lads and lasses who served and died for our country between the years of 1914-1918. Nearly a century later and it is somewhat surreal, yet extremely heartwarming that we can share a drink with them, even if it is a little unconventional!
