"A box from the jungle was left at the front door of my house, inside… there were cymbals with a heavy metal sound."
Mariano has an absolutely stunning story to tell, a story about himself, Nicko McBrain and of course you're very own Drum Shop, intrigued to hear more then read on! Mariano started drumming in 1986 and he first became interested in drumming through a high school friend:
"I started drumming in 1986. One of my high school friends had a drum kit and because I didn't have enough money he let me borrow a snare drum, a cheap pair of hi-hats and a bass drum pedal. To this day I still have the snare drum he let me borrow all those years ago."
A story that we're sure will be one echoed all over the world, Mariano started drumming with borrowed instruments and worked hard on his drumming skill and technique in preparation for purchasing his very own gear. As we all know sometimes working and general life makes it difficult to keep drumming, however after a break from drumming Mariano started playing again 8 years ago and has never looked back.
Fast forward to 2018 and Mariano, a dedicated Iron Maiden fan is the proud owner of Nicko McBrain of Iron Maiden's Premier Elite drum kit and the Nicko McBrain Limited Edition Paiste Treasure Cymbals Box Set and here's his interestingly unique story of how he first came to acquire these drumming beauties back in 2013!
"In 2013 I was practicing drumming with an electronic drum kit. I bought it because I lived in an apartment with the rest of the neighbours so close to me that an acoustic drum kit was just impossible due to the high volume of noise it would create. I was planning to move to a house and once I'd got there to build a music room so I wouldn’t upset anyone with the noise. As I am an Iron Maiden fan and more than this a Nicko McBrain fan, I decided to get a drum kit similar to Nicko's Iron Maiden drum kit. I started to do some research into the brand he used and after searching found that it was a Premier Elite, but with a custom design. After searching the web for this style and design, I don’t know how but I found that Premier would make a special order replica drum kit, exactly like Iron Maidens.
I found a link to the Drum Shop website, after searching through, I contacted Drum Shop directly and asked them for the replica drum kit. This was on Sunday, on Monday I woke up to a response from Andy Anderson (Drum Shop Director) telling me that he could get the replica but if I wanted there was the possibility of getting the actual drum kit Nicko himself had used. The serial number was 001, and it was the kit Nicko used and played in his drum clinics. This is the drum kit I now own... how crazy is that!"
So, the amazing story is that one day Mariano was looking for a drum kit similar to Iron Maiden’s and the next day he was talking to us and we said we could get him Nicko's actual drum kit! The moral of the story is that no request is too big and although it may seem impossible, we'll move the earth for our customers to get the gear they need! And the story doesn't stop there! Earlier last year Paiste in collaboration with Nicko McBrain created replicas of Nicko's Treasure World Tour cymbal set, now this cymbal set isn't just any set.. oh no, Nicko McBrain's cymbals set up is something specific. The set consists of all Paiste cymbals, with mostly Signature Reflectors but four of them were custom made specially for Nicko McBrain himself.
"Although I had this fantastic drum kit, I felt frustrated not to have the complete set up including cymbals. One day a year ago, it came to my mind to email Andy to find out if he was able to get Nicko McBrain's Treasure cymbals and the answer he gave surprised me yet again: “Yes! I have Paul searching for those cymbals right now!” I didn’t know that Paiste had recently released a special limited edition with the entire set of Nicko McBrain cymbals….. and we were so quick that the Nicko McBrain Paiste Treasures I received had the serial number 001, an absolute perfect match to the 001 serial number on my Nicko McBrain Premier Elite drum kit.
That is my amazing story. What I have learnt from this is that if you want something strongly the universe moves in a strange way, so you will get it.'
We asked Marianno what advice he would give to anyone who is a beginner to drumming or wanting to learn the craft:
"My advice to beginners is that playing an instrument is one of the most difficult things to do because no mistakes are allowed. This means it takes many hours each and every day and you must keep working in spite of feeling frustrated. Only the passion for learning the instrument, whatever instrument that may be, will force you to keep working."
