The Tony Williams Tribute Series Cymbals are now available at Drum Shop and we know for certain that there will be drummers far and wide that have to grab one if not all of these cymbals!
For those of you who don't know, Tony Williams was a once in a lifetime talent, a musician whose skill and determination to the craft was glaringly obvious from a very young age. He studied with drummer Alan Dawson and began playing professionally by the age of 13. Fame soon found Tony and catapulted him into the public sphere with the American Jazz group, the Miles Davis Quintet. Throughout the 1960's and even beyond his time with the respected Miles Davis Quintet, Tony was setting standards and raising the bar with the sound he created, but one thing above all made him a distinctive musician and that was the sound he created with his cymbals. This is an accolade that drummers even today still strive to sound like.
The cymbals Tony used and the sounds he created are that respected that the cymbal masters themselves, Istanbul Mehmet took it upon themselves to forge replica cymbals that mirror Tony's cymbals as closely as possible, even down to the last flaw. Colleen Williams, Tony's wife lovingly hand delivered Tony's actual cymbals to Istanbul Mehmet's HQ in Turkey where the cymbal masters themselves accurately weighed, measured and recorded every aspect and detail of his cymbals in order to truly recreate an authentic replica of the cymbals behind the man. This shows the level of dedication and allure around these cymbals, no expense has been spared and no level of detail missed to create these vintage feel cymbals.
There are three cymbals which have been recreated by Istanbul Mehmet, a pair of 14" hi hat cymbals, a 18" crash cymbal and a 22" ride cymbal. Each have their own unique qualities which make them Tony William's cymbals, however all hold that vintage feel of way back when, a sound that is distinctive and a sound that really does draw you in. All of the Tony Williams Tribute cymbals have been crafted using B20 bronze with a vintage finish and are hand hammered in the traditional Istanbul Mehmet way in their HQ in Turkey. So let's take a look at these elusive cymbals...
First up is the Tony Williams Tribute 14" Hi Hat cymbals which are cymbals that were created to last a lifetime, just like Tony's actual cymbals! They maintain that warm, bright quality that was a staple in Tony's actual hi hat cymbals! A truly traditional hi-hat that creates a full, well rounded sound with a firm, precise stick response whilst still delivering all those vintage feels that the 60's were filled with!
The Tony Williams Tribute 18" Crash cymbal is commanding to say the least, it is lively with a full sustain and can call on it's sensitivity when it's really needed. The crash cymbal has intentional cracks within the body and towards the edge of the cymbal. This is completely intentional and reflective of Tony's working cymbals, it does not hinder the sound performance in any way, in fact the crack in the body accelerates the decay of the crash cymbal. Again it holds a precise, comfortable stick response that performs when you need it the most.
More so than any of the other cymbals within the Tony Williams Tribute series, the 22" ride cymbal displays a lifetime of drumming and this has been perfectly replicated in the Tribute cymbals. It has been drilled out in several places to stop the spread of cracks. It delivers a dry stick sound whilst maintaining dark almost orchestral overtones. Istanbul Mehmet have replicated this distinctive and somewhat iconic cymbal down to the very last flaw!
Tony, his cymbals and the Miles Davis Quintet where beyond a doubt the height of fashion on the American Jazz scene in the 1960's, wouldn't it be cool to inject a little bit of swagger, style and sophistication of the vintage kind into your drumming repertoire today ... We think so!
