The Boring Stuff....... or is it?
Yamaha is a huge musical instruments manufacturer that originates from as early as 1887 when Torakusu Yamaha built his first reed organ, and went on to start production of upright pianos in 1900!
Production of their first drums started in 1967 with the D20 and D30 at their original production facility, which utilised the Air Seal System that is still a vital part of their manufacturing today. In 1977 Yamaha produced the YD9000 Recording Custom Kit, with 100% birch shells. Despite maple being the most popular material for drums at the time, Yamaha's research into manufacturing their primary product, the piano, they realised that birch would be an ideal material for drum shells. With this kit, Yamaha became the first to apply piano finishing techniques to drums, hence the name - Piano Black. The YD9000 had such a well-defined sound, perfect for recording that it became the most recorded drum set in history!!
This Pre Loved Yamaha Recording Custom that we have in stock is not very old at all the customer simply wanted a different colour.
Brought back to life by Yamaha alongside the legendary drummer, Steve Gadd, the drum kit boasts 6-ply All North American Birch Drum Shells. Just like the original YD9000, the birch shells provide a controlled sound, making it perfect for recording in the studio, while also offering boosted high frequencies, a slightly reduced midrange and a good low-end punch. The loud and cutting sound of birch makes this kit equally as perfect for live playing too!
The 30 degree bearing edges are complimented by the newly designed Hi Tension Lug that is carefully weighted to enhance lower frequencies. The kit is easy to use and is easy to tune to however you want/need it to sound. This means it will fit in with ease into your band set up or recording studio and you can crack on with your drumming as soon as possible! Not to mention the simple yet stunning and sleek piano black finish reminiscent of the original 1977 Recording Custom Kit!
Steve Gadd has been known as one of the most influential drummers of all time. After he recorded some of the most legendary drum tracks, like "Aja", "Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover" and "Nite Sprite", it is safe to say that Steve Gadd has in some way had an effect on most, if not all drummers alive today! In case you've not yet heard of him, Steve Gadd, more recently was involved in bring back to life the 1977 Yamaha Recording Custom, into contemporary drumming in 2016. In the video above you can watch him play his own set and talk about the research and development that went into creating it!
