This pre-loved Yamaha PHX (Phoenix) kit features 11ply hybrid shells and is constructed from Kapur, Jatoba and Maple, each with a beautiful finish. The Jatoba ply is built in the centre as it's a very hard wood and keeps the structure of the shell. Each side of this is Kapur which adds a lovely warm sound. The Maple is added to deliver a rounded tone and those all-important high and mid frequencies. This Yamaha drum kit not only sounds amazing but looks amazing too with it's polar white finish and stunning gold hardware!
When Yamaha was founded in 1897, the Phoenix logo was registered as the companies official trademark to be known around the world! The first premier organs from yamaha adorned the iconic logo and embodied the spirit of their founder. Yamaha's goal was to produce instruments of 'world-class quality' and 'unrivalled beauty'.
In 2007, Yamaha celebrated its 40th anniversary of drum manufacturing. To celebrate this milestone, Yamaha decided that it's nect 40 years should be dedicated to recapturing the spirit of the company with a rebirth of their drums, while striving for musical excellence. This rekindled spirit of innovation and musical resolve gave life to the PHX series.
"The Phoenix is considered the symbol of immortality, a rebirth into a fresh being, full of new life".
The wood specialists at Yamaha have discovered new materials that work great together in a new hybrid shell. The Brazilian Jatoba wood is the hardest material in the PHX hybrid shell. It is positioned as the core ply and centre note of the drum. On either side of the Jatoba wood is a few layers of Kapur, which is a Malaysian hard wood. On the outer and inner layers of the shell is North American Maple Wood. This type of wood is considered a classic high quality drum shell material because of it's hardness and viscosity, however in this hybrid shell it is the softest material.
In this structure, the woods become softer towards the outer surfaces of the shell in both directions, resulting in an "excitation structure" which maximises the shell's performance. The excitation structure increases the heads vibration to it's full potential, achieving an effect in sound waves similar to rippling waves from a pebble dropped in water.
The Yamaha YESSII shell mounting system uses a unique rubber insert and a maple wood plate positioned at the nodal points (where no vibration occurs) to ensure the kit reaches it's maximum resonance when playing. Acting as a shock mount system for the drum, the YESSII SMS prevents the vibrations from being absorbed and stifled through the hardware and losing some of its resonance. In larger tom sizes, the rubber inserts are also positioned onto the shell where overtones are present to produce the appropriate mixture of sustain and control.
Yamaha's brand new Hook Lug system minimises the rotation of the lug casing during tuning and firmly supports the tuning bolt through the wide and straight post, even at high tension. Instead of positioning the hook lug at the nodal point, the lug isplaced at the area of the shell that produces unwanted overtones, muting them and allowing for an unobstructed and richer tone. The combination of this and the YESSII mount system provides a pure and naturally EQ'd sound with a clear and organic tone.
In order to control the drum's tone and articulation, the PHX's floor tom, tom-tom and bass drum shells each use different types of bearing edges. The bearing edge angles are all set at 30 degrees but the radiuses of the bearing edges differ to gain optimum acoustic performance from the shell. As well as this, a secret treatment process is used to ensure each edge is finished with a perfect smoothness, guaranteeing easy and wide tuning ranges.
This kit is truly something spectacular, with its rich history and amazing features, all topped off with a stunning polar white finish and complimentary gold hardware - you would be missing out not to get your hands on this beauty. Check it out here before is gone!
