Contemporanea 6" Cuica 'Light' in Aluminium
A cuica is a percussion instrument from Brazil that makes a really cool sound. People often describe it as a mix between a squeak and a growl. It's made up of a drum body with a single head stretched over one end, usually made from animal skin or synthetic material. Inside the drum, there's a bamboo stick or metal rod attached to the center of the drumhead, which sticks out through a hole on the other side.
To play the cuica, a musician rubs the stick with a wet cloth or their fingers, creating friction against the drumhead. This, along with the pressure and changes in tension, is what gives the cuica its unique sound.
The cuica is commonly used in different styles of Brazilian music like samba, pagode, and other traditional genres. It adds a special rhythm and texture to the music, giving it more color and character. In samba music especially, the cuica is known for creating dynamic and expressive rhythms, making the music feel lively and festive.
